COMPARE · PORTABLE ROWS FIRST

Compare podcast apps: offline, ad-skip, OPML, and what Premium unlocks

A useful comparison is a contract, not an 18-column trophy shelf. Rank unlimited offline on free, app-inserted ads versus host mid-rolls, OPML exit, car support, and whether Premium is Podcast Brain or a download unlock. The Podcast App publishes this page and scores its own player on the same grid. Competitor prices and plan limits are omitted on purpose — they go stale.

Offline is free

Unlimited offline downloads on the free player. Premium does not sell a bigger download bucket.

Ads have two layers

No app-inserted inventory. Host mid-rolls inside the episode file can still play.

Premium is Brain

Optional AI on eligible transcripts. It is not how we unlock the player.

Which rows made the gridOnly constraints a reader can verify in one sitting: offline policy, ad model, OPML exit, car support, what Premium buys. No star ratings, no “best for” badges.Every row names an in-app path or a vendor help page.
Our columnRead from the shipped app and its source: unlimited downloads (cap code removed August 22, 2026), no ad SDK since March 9, 2026, OPML import/export under Settings → Manage Subscriptions, CarPlay.Install and open each path.
Competitor columnsFilled only from each vendor’s own help pages, linked in Sources. Prices and plan limits are omitted because they go stale faster than we re-verify.Follow the Sources links; nothing is quoted from a review site.

How this page was produced: Assembled by the operator on September 11, 2026 from the app source for our column and vendor documentation for the others. No third-party review or listicle was copied. The screenshot is from our store-listing capture corpus.

The 2026 grid

Five apps. Soft notes. No invented prices.

TPA cells are product-true. Competitor cells are durable public facts (platforms, OPML posture, car surfaces) — not guessed dollar amounts, ad-inventory counts, or “only / none” kill lines. If a vendor page disagrees tomorrow, their page wins.

AI vs player-only Usable player without Premium. Brain is optional AI. Player-first with web power tools. Do not assume TPA-style Brain. Player-only iOS listening tools. Built-in player; Apple transcripts on many shows. Player-only open-source control.

Spotify is a music-plus-podcast bundle, not a column here. Listener OPML exit has historically been weak — verify Spotify’s current docs before you invest a library. We do not publish Spotify prices, ad counts, or download caps on this page because those change. Wider scoring lives on best podcast app 2026.

Comparison proof

The Podcast App claims that are stable enough to compare

These three rows do not wait on a store SKU refresh. Everything else — competitor dollars, their AI menus, their ad inventory — belongs on their site.

Premium is Podcast Brain

Podcast Brain is optional AI on eligible transcript-backed listening. Soft free AI caps are an allowance, not a locked player. Summaries and AI-generated chapters sit on Premium. Downloads do not. Longer write-up: AI podcast player with optional Brain.

OPML is the exit

Import and export public RSS follows. OPML does not copy downloads, history, queues, or playlists. Use the switch guide once, then re-download commute files on Wi-Fi. Keep an exit copy with OPML export without an account.

Honest scoring

Where we win the grid — and where we tell you to stay

We wrote this page. That is a conflict of interest. Treat the table as a decision grid, not a trophy shelf.

Where The Podcast App scores

Free core listening without app-inserted ads. Unlimited offline downloads. OPML in and out. CarPlay plus Android Auto phone projection. Optional Brain if you later want eligible transcript search. The player stays usable if you never open AI.

  • iOS and Android. Android is shipped — not “coming soon.”
  • Skip silence is a Settings toggle. Volume boost is not shipped. Do not score us on it.
  • Podcasting 2.0 chapters JSON and publisher transcripts when the feed has them. Not a V4V / podroll listener screen.
Playerfree, no app-inserted ads Offlineunlimited on free Brainoptional Premium AI

Honest cons

Pocket Casts still wins if you want a mature web/desktop power-user surface. Overcast still wins if you live on iOS and prefer its listening tools. Apple Podcasts still wins if you want the default Apple app and never leave that ecosystem. AntennaPod still wins if Android open-source control is the whole point.

No web listener app. No Chromecast. Named playlists beyond Queue are not a library tab. Wear OS is not a claim on this comparison. Video has a free daily cap; Premium lifts that cap — that is video, not audio downloads. If those gaps beat the rows we win, keep the other app. Export OPML first.

How to use this page

Pick one must-have row. Eliminate. Then decide on Brain.

Most “compare podcast apps” queries are really one non-negotiable in disguise: Android, no app-inserted ads, offline without a paywall, or a way out of Apple Podcasts. Run that row first.

  1. If the row is offline: require unlimited offline on free. Anyone selling “offline” as the upgrade is a different contract. TPA: free. Confirm competitor caps on their current plan page — we will not invent them.
  2. If the row is ads: split app-inserted inventory from host mid-rolls. TPA has none of the first. The second can still play. Pages that skip that split are lying or sloppy.
  3. If the row is portability: require OPML import and export. Spotify-class catalogs without an exit are a trap. Switch path: /switch.
  4. If the row is Android: TPA and AntennaPod both ship. Apple Podcasts and Overcast do not. Whitelist the player in OEM battery savers.
  5. If the row is AI: decide if you want a player or a player plus AI. Brain is Premium. You can ignore it and still listen. See Podcast Brain.

We will not claim “#1 app on earth.” We claim a clear free-core contract and a portable library. If another column wins your matrix, that is the correct answer.

Ads row

Does The Podcast App skip ads?

Smart Ad-Skip is a one-tap skip on supported podcasts, not a universal skip. It does not strip or permanently remove host-read audio ads from the file. Host mid-rolls may still play when Ad-Skip does not apply. See the no app-inserted ads page for the full two-ad-layers explanation.

FAQ

Compare questions people actually search

Score portable rows first: unlimited offline on free versus a download paywall, app-inserted ads versus host mid-rolls, OPML import and export, car support, and whether Premium unlocks the player or only optional AI. The Podcast App publishes this grid and scores itself on it. Competitor prices and plan limits change — check each vendor's current store listing.

Unlimited offline downloads are free. Premium is Podcast Brain — optional AI on eligible transcript-backed listening. It does not unlock subscribe, queue, stream, OPML, or a larger download pool. Remaining bounds are device storage, queue size, and your auto-download setting.

No. The Podcast App does not insert banners, feed spots, or player ads. Host-read mid-rolls inside a show's audio file can still play. That is publisher content, not app inventory.

Score the same rows on Android as on iPhone. The Podcast App ships the free core on Android: subscribe, queue, stream, unlimited offline downloads, OPML. AntennaPod is a strong open-source alternative if FOSS control is the whole point. Whitelist the player in OEM battery savers so background play is not killed.

The player reads Podcasting 2.0 chapters JSON when the feed publishes it, plus publisher transcripts when present. Features need both a tagged feed and a player that reads the tags. We do not claim funding links, podroll, or Value4Value as listener screens. Test with a known Podcasting 2.0 feed rather than a marketing matrix.

Export OPML from the old app and import it in The Podcast App. OPML moves public RSS follows (title + xmlUrl). It does not copy downloads, history, queues, or playlists. Import once, verify niche feeds, then re-download commute episodes on Wi-Fi.
